Information on Heart Disease in Women

From the time boys and girls are little; they are taught that their bodies are different. Why, then, has the medical community spent the last fifty years or so treating female heart patients exactly the same as male heart patients? This is especially distressing considering the fact that heart disease is now the number one killer of women as well as men in the United States.

The first piece of information on heart disease that it's important for women to have is that women have different heart attack symptoms than men.

If you believe you are at risk for coronary problems, it' s never too soon to begin a heart .....
We've all watched enough movies to know what a heart attack looks like, right? Any time a white haired male character gasps and clutches the left side of his chest, we know he's having a heart attack.

But what about the female character that experiences pain in her upper back or soreness in her neck or jaw? Probably nothing much, right? At worst a strained muscle or a few too many stressors. Wrong. In women, these are the symptoms of heart attack. Other symptoms may include nausea and vomiting, fatigue or extreme tiredness, and a sensation of feeling lightheaded or dizzy

How to Avoid Chronic Heart Disease

It is very easy to neglect your health by postponing .....
Many women never experience the "traditional" symptoms of crushing chest pain, so they may delay seeking treatment. Even when they do seek treatment promptly, doctors who are not aware of the different symptoms experienced by men and women may be too quick to write off the rather vague symptoms women do experience as stress or as a mild infection that will soon pass.

Women need to be aware that they are more likely to experience "atypical" symptoms, and should be assertive about asking their doctors to explore the possibility of heart disease.

Information on Heart Disease # 2: Mortality Statistics

Another bit of information on heart disease women should be aware of is that women are more likely to die of a heart attack than men. They are more likely to die during the event, more likely to die in the hospital, and more likely to die in the following year. Researchers are not sure whether this is true because women have smaller hearts that are more likely to be devastated by a cardiac event, or because women experiencing atypical symptoms put off seeking treatment for themselves until the heart is too damaged to be treated.

As a woman, you are your own best advocate. Inform yourself about heart disease, and assert yourself to ensure you get the tests and treatments you need to keep your heart healthy and strong.
